Irregular dietary habits and inappropriate foods especially when cooked with excess of spice upsets our digestive systems and causes numbers of diseases. Constipation is one of the digestive related problem where a person suffering with constipation passes less than three bowel movement in a week or the affected person feels difficulty in the passing of stool because of low or we can say inadequate intake of fiber content in the diet. Person suffering from constipation also senses a feeling of fullness, even after having a bowel movement and experiences rectal blockage along with the feeling of pain generated during bowel movements. The stool passed rarely in the case constipation is often dry and hard, because of inadequate water intake.

Low water and fiber intake is considered as the main cause of constipation, as they have their key role in the formation of soft and heavily sized stool.   

And at the same time, Ayurveda mentions constipation (vibandha) among vatic disorder as the major role of Vata Dosha is to support movement and eliminatory process of the body. Apana Vayu (a component of Vata Dosha) is a downward energy primarily responsible for elimination of stool, urine, sperm, menstrual blood and fetus. Ayurveda suggests all those food and lifestyle habits that supports the opposite of Vata Dosha should be consumed and followed to provide nourishment for vatic temperament. Consumption of warm, moderately oily, moist , fiber and protein rich food can show its effective results in the formation of healthy stool. 

Five effective Ayurvedic Herbs for the treatment of Constipation :

  • Triphala – Triphala is one of the most widely used Ayurvedic herb for the treatment of so many diseases. It has been considered best Ayurvedic remedy in the treatment of digestive problems including constipation. It improves the bowel movements by the loosening of stools through its laxative property and thereby helps in curing constipation. Studies have showed several positive effects of Triphala on stomach ulcers also and helped in restoring the healthy enzymes. It also inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria and support the growth of beneficial bacteria in gut, improving overall digestive health. 

  • Flaxseed – Flaxseeds allows the bulk formation of stool and its smooth movement through the digestive tracks because of the presence of rich amount of dietary fibers and omega-3 fatty acids. It also contain a soluble fiber called mucilage, which in turns binds with water to make gel for the soft movement. 

  • Ghee and milk – Having one or two tablespoon of ghee in a glass of milk before going to sleep at night can help in getting relief from constipation.
