Triphala is a mixture of three dried fruits native of India. The components of Triphala are as follows:
Amla: Scientific name of Amla is ‘Emblica officinalis’. It is most commonly known by Indian Gooseberry. Due to its medicinal properties, it plays an important role in Ayurveda medicine system. It is one of the oldest fruits known to people in India. The berries have a sour, sharp taste and a fibrous texture. We can find this tree anywhere in India as it grows on a small to medium-sized trees that grow throughout India. The berries are often pickled, soaked in sugar syrup or cooked into dishes.
The Charak Samhita says that “Amalaki” is one of the best reviving herbs. By enhancing the process of digestion and food absorption, food is converted into useful substances rather than becoming undigested and toxic. It is traditionally considered one of the best herbs for balancing stomach acidity and also used to prevent cancer.
Indian gooseberries are nutritious and high in Vitamin C, amino acids and minerals. Amalaki also assists with bowel movements and is supportive to the urinary system by helping the body eliminate excess water in a natural way. It also helps liver to remove accumulated toxins from the body.
Bibhitaki: Scientific name of Bibhitaki is ‘Terminalia bellirica’. Terminalia bellirica is a large tree that grows in Southeast Asia, fruit of this tree is used as a treatment for common ailments like viral and bacterial infections. This herbal remedy has numerous uses and may help treat a number of issues. According to the ancient Ayurvedic text called Sushruta Samhita, Bibhitaki helps purify the blood, maintains blood clotting ability and purifies, clears and opens our body channels.
Charaka Samhita states that Bibhitaki is ideal for relaxing Pitta and Kapha dosha. It also cleanses the Rasa, Rakta, Mamsa and Meda Dhatus (plasma, blood and fat tissues). It is known for its inflammatory properties. Bibhitaki is commonly used to treat blood sugar levels deregulation and diabetes as it is high in gallic acid and ellagic acid, phytochemicals which have beneficial effect on insulin sensitivity and body weight.
It is effective in balancing and nurturing vocal cords, is anti-bacterial and a Rasayana for the eyes. It also nourishes the hair, helps to maintain the hair roots, color and thickness.
Haritaki: Scientific name of Haritaki is ‘Terminalia chebula’. Terminalia chebula isa medicinal tree that grows in Middle East Asia, India, China and Thailand. A green fruit of this tree is used as medicine and it is the main component of Triphala. Haritaki has a high esteem in Ayurveda, it is commonly referred to as ‘King of Medicines’. According to the great Ayurveda Sage Charaka, it is considered to be as nourishing as mother’s milk. It helps in absorption of nutrients and hence making it good substance for digestion. It cleanses the both micro and macro circulatory channels.
It is also said to maintain balance of all aspects of the skin. From ancient times, it is used as a remedy to improve conditions like, heart problems, ulcers, asthma and stomach ailments. Studies have also shown that it has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties.
