At what cost, do we all grow old? What cause such changes? And what else comes with senility?
Well, these are some common questions that comes to our mind, when we think of growing old. We often notice certain kind of gradual inclination in every organ system of our body. But the most common system that gets hampered during old age is skeletal system of our body. The reason of locomotion from our juvenile to cessation phase is skeletal system, this particular system has instilled our life with huge number of physical activities, that we perform in accordance to our will. Can you ever imagine life of human being without skeletal system?
Well, I think we all agree on the fact that life without movement will just be like a black and white photograph, hanging on a wall without colors and filters. The skeletal system is generally supporting frame comprising bones, muscles ,cartilage, tendons, ligaments and associated vessels and nerves. Joint pain is one of the most common problem of skeletal system among the age group of population above 40, the additional possible reason behind joint pain can be sustained bad postural habit, overuse of specific joints, bad dietary and lifestyle habits, obesity, injury, and infections.
According to Ayurvedic concepts, joint related problems are caused by the accumulation of sticky toxic substance known as ama in the joints. Ama is the product of undigested food, usually formed when we consume unwholesome diet (ahar). Whereas, the other major reason for the decomposition of bones and their weakness is elevated Vata level. The rusksha (dry) guna (quality) of Vata Dosha combats the Shleshaka Kapha, a type of Kapha responsible for the lubrication of joints. Aggravated Vata Dosha along with accumulation of ama causes several discomforts like stiffness, severe pain, swelling, immobility, and weakness sometimes accompanied by fever.

Ayurvedic science believes in treating the ailments by eliminating the root cause by the mean of suitable ahar (diet), vihar (lifestyle habits) and aushadh dravyas (potent drugs).
Ahar
Just to make clear, ahar is merely our dietary habit that is wholesome for our mental and physical health. As we mentioned earlier, aggravated Vata Dosha and ama is responsible for the pain and discomfort affined with our joints. So, the individuals suffering for joint pain are advised to consume food that has the potential to bring down the elevated Vata Dosha. It is recommended to favor sweet, salt and sour tastes, as they pacify the Vata Dosha, but at the same time it is also advised to inhibit bitter, pungent and astringent tastes to avoid extra aggravation of Vata in the body. Wheat , brown rice, oats, mung beans and ghee are some of the Vata pacifying ahar, that person with joint pain should seek with an additional implementation of calcium and vitamin D rich foods like- milk, cheese, eggs, broccoli and soya products.

Abdication from certain bad habits like alcohol consumption, tobacco chewing, and smoking can lead you to the path of prosperous and healthy life. Oil massage, heat and cold compressions, aroma-therapy along with light exercises and yoga specific for every joint are some very effective habits that one can implement in his/her daily to life to cure the pain of joints.
Aushadh Dravya (potent herbs)
Herbal plants with anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties are considered very effective in reducing the pain associated with joints. Dashmool, ajwain (carom seed), boswellia (Boswellia serrata), ginger (Zingiber officinale), amla (Emblica officinalis), aloe vera, triphala, and massage oil of sesame, peppermint, eucalyptus, mustard, nirgundi (Vitex negundo), almond and flaxseed are some potent drugs found to be very effective in the treatment of joint pain.
